TikTok Feed Ad Spacing

2 minute read

I re-downloaded TikTok (first open) and got these ad spacings:

10 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 4 / 4 / 4 / 6 / 3 / 3 / 4 / 3 / 4 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 7 / 3 / 7 / 4 / 4 / 11 / 14 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 7 / 4 / 4 / 7 / 3 / 9 / 9

Each number is how many organic videos I saw before an ad. Sometimes there were multiple lives, usually in the groups of 7.

Lives might be considered as separate in some way.

I’m not sure whether it’s a completely online prediction, determined as some kind of optimal sequence, or whether there’s longer bursts when they predict I might be more likely to leave.

I viewed a total of 171 videos and saw 35 ads. This is about 1 ad for every 5 videos.

It seems like the ideal / min spacing is 3 videos per ad.

As you browse longer, it seems like they spread out the ads more in order to keep you engaged.

I think ads are what generally causes friction and causes you to leave a platform, so showing fewer ads can probably lead to more revenue.

Having ads evenly spaced out will make your brain fall into a pattern. Making them random will prevent you from telling when an ad is coming. This probably increases revenue significantly.
